sharing experience, providing resources, fostering success

Welcome to fieldmom.com! We are geologists and moms doing fieldwork in Alaska. We hope to find time soon to make this an amazing, resource-filled site. Fieldmom.com was born over our lunch-time runs where the conversation would be preceded by the words, "..I have a mom question for you...". The rest of the run would be filled with shared stories, hints for success, and even advice by the blind leading the blind. We've covered all of the basics: the working mom trying to pump breast milk in-between meetings; deciding how late in our pregnancy we can actually do fieldwork in remote Alaskan locations with frequent helicopter, small aircraft, and ship excursions; can I really carry a backpack all day when I'm 5 months pregnant?; does the loud sound of helicopters and firearm discharge harm the fetus?; can my husband handle the other kids for a month without going crazy? - we've talked about it all and would love to share our experience. We've managed to get as far as purchasing a domain name and getting this intro page up, but we can't seem to make our lives stop long enough to get the rest of the content going. We have great ideas however, so stick with us and keep checking. We will somehow find time to share our stories with you. We are geologists and moms doing fieldwork in Alaska, but we hope our experience will help others in similar situations.

Sincerely, your fieldmom.com co-founders,

Janet Guidetti Schaefer, Geologist, Alaska Volcano Observatory, mother of 3

Patty Burns, Geologist, Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, fieldmom support woman extraordinaire

Jessica Faust Larsen, Research Professor of Geology, University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, mother of 1
